Mission Statement Founded in 1934, AAR is the world’s leading railroad policy, research, standard setting, and technology organization that focuses on the safety and productivity of the U.S. freight rail industry.
A merica’s freight railroads operate the safest, most ecient, and cost-eective freight transportation system in the world. The Association of American Railroads (AAR) helps keep it that way. AAR brings together a broad spectrum of organizations connected to the rail industry. AAR Full Members include the major freight railroads in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Railroad Aliates consist of smaller freight railroads, commuter rail systems, and other non-Class I railroads. Associates include railcar owners, suppliers, manufacturers, engineering firms, and service providers that support the operations and growth of the rail industry. Promoting Rail From Every Angle Our advocacy eorts are spread across four distinct areas: ● Policy: Working with elected ocials and leaders in Washington, DC, we advance sound public policy that supports the interests of the freight rail industry, ensuring they continue to meet America’s transportation needs today and tomorrow.
● Insights: Our expert economists prepare weekly, quarterly and annual statistical reports that provide insight into the operations of North America’s freight railroads. ● Research & Technology: Through our two subsidiaries, Railinc and MxV Rail, AAR supports continued research and development projects that enhance the safety, security, and eciency of the railroad industry. Investing for the Future AAR and its members are committed to strategic infrastructure investments to ensure the eciency and safety of the U.S. freight transportation system. From 1980 to 2023, America’s freight railroads spent about $810 billion on locomotives, freight cars, tracks, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure and equipment. We’re working to ensure that freight railroads are able to continue privately investing in their networks to deliver for America.
● Standards: As the standard-setting organization for North America’s
railroads, we establish safety, security, and operating standards that provide seamless and safe operations across America’s nearly 140,000-mile freight rail network.
