O ver the past two years, as shippers have struggled to get loads on trucks and find affordable rates, some have started looking to the railroads for help. Intermodal rail offers a good relief valve for the highly pressured truck market. “Truck represents 94% of long-haul shipments domestically, whereas intermodal is in the 6% range, with room to grow,” says Mark McKendry, senior vice president, intermodal at NFI, a Camden, New Jersey- based third-party logistics (3PL) company.
