The World Shipping Council reports 576 containers were lost at sea in 2024, up from a record-low 221 in 2023 but still well below the 10-year average of 1,274. Losses were concentrated around the Cape of Good Hope, where vessel transits surged 191% amid Red Sea disruptions and hazardous conditions caused about 200 containers to be lost.
