F or years, conversations about clean freight transportation centered on pilots, promises, and pending policy. That’s changing. Across the industry—from manufacturer investment decisions to eet operator strategy sessions to the latest trucking industry trade shows—the tone has shifted decisively toward execution. The numbers back it up. Autonomous trucking provider Waabi recently secured $1 billion in venture capital to accelerate deployment of its autonomous truck line. Volvo Group committed more than $2 billion to developing more fuel-efcient trucks, alongside a fresh investment to expand its U.S. manufacturing capabilities. And FedEx Freight’s spin-off strategy, as outlined by incoming CEO John A. Smith, centers on practical sustainability, predictive AI, and network optimization. FedEx Freight chose these technologies as much for their operational payoff as for their environmental benet, according to Smith.
